Petrova Parents' Club
June 4, 2012, Elementary Library, 7:00pm
Attendees: Josh Dann, Bob Laba, Norma Woodruff, Becky LaDue, Jenn Small, Lori Mouranie, Polly Kelting, Sunita Halasz, Zoe Smith, Kathleen Silvius, Chrissy Hayden, Deb Ryan
Treasurer's Report
We have made all our payments for the year, with the exception of the upcoming Fun Day.
Fun Day
Josh explained that he will assign staff to each activity and each classroom. Parents that have been suggested for each classroom will be contacted by grade liaisons. We also need a lot of set up volunteers and a three or four people to stay after for clean up.
Points Programs: Box Tops & Price Chopper
Box Tops collection deadline is June 11.
Lori and Josh noted that we used to have over 300 Price Chopper card numbers, then Price Chopper re-vamped its system and everyone had to re-submit their numbers. Now we only have 95! With this amount of cards registered to our school, we accumulated 64,190 points which we used to purchase: reading comprehension cubes, Piece Gradestuff, a mobile storage cart, Head Full of Numbers math game, Rolling in the Money math game (to put things in perspective, an iPad is 400,000 points ).
We discussed ways to collect more PC numbers such as with information in the newspaper, at the Welcome Back BBQ, with an envelope of brochures on the auditorium doors, at Curriculum Night, and in an all-school email.
4th of July Event
Lori, Becky and Zoe will give out balloons (buy ribbon) and have games for this summer festival. We wondered if a local business might be able to donate a helium tank and Josh said he would ask Sturdy Supply. We might hold a blanket raffle.
School Garden
Polly said that discussions for this will begin in the fall. Polly noted that it would be nice to coordinate a thank you to the teachers and staff who helped with EcoClub.
Ironman Grant Application
Zoe noted that there is another opportunity to receive funds from this organization - July 16 deadline. Awards from $250-$2000. Their mission is "to expose area youth to traditional summer and winter sports fostering the next generation of competitive athletes." The group discussed possible ideas and decided an excellent project idea would be to ask for funding to bring all students to Dewey for a snowshoeing field trip. The school already has a large number of snowshoes acquired through another grant. This proposal could include funds to hire a coordinator for a pre-lesson in the field to get ready for Dewey.
Grade Liaisons - ideas for next year, nominations for next year
Zoe will ask new nominees if they would be interested in being a GL. Zoe would also like to have a summer meeting or two to get the GL's up to speed before the school year begins.
Lori discussed the importance of having families identified in each grade, or even better, each classroom, to welcome new out-of-town students in each grade.
Committees for Next Year
The group identified team leaders for all the various activities of PPC: Open House & Welcome Back BBQ, Curriculum Night, School Pictures, Playground Volunteer Coordinator, Book Fair, Holiday Raffle, Holiday Giving, Christmas Tree Sales, Winter Carnival, Spring Fundraiser, Fun Day, Teacher Appreciation (lunch and conference snacks), Facebook page, Halloween Party, Football Snackbar, Points Programs (Box Tops, Labels, Price Chopper), After School Programs, Mini-Grants, Homework Haven, one overall Program/Volunteer Coordinator, and Grade Liaisons.
Principal's Update
School day might be lengthened by 15 minutes in the morning, to simply help with transition times between programming. This would not be added instruction time. Sunita asked about an award Josh received. He explained that he was awarded the Principal of the Year Award at SUNY Potsdam and had been nominated by all the Korean teachers who spent 11 weeks at Petrova. Our group was very proud to hear this and hoped that there could be a way to get this information in the newspaper. The group agreed again how wonderful it was to have the Korean teachers. Josh noted they were all certified teachers working on their Masters degrees here, so it was like having 20 extra teachers in the building every Monday, and it was a great exposure to a different culture for the kids.
Summer Meeting
Dates for two summer meetings will be scheduled for mid-July and the end of August.
Open Discussion
Lots of Thank Yous to Parents' Club - Josh noted a thank you letter in the newspaper from Lynn Newman for Teacher Appreciation. And Sunita shared three thank you's from mini-grant awardees: Jesse Jakobe, Diana LeBlanc, and Amy Webb. Special thanks were given to Norma, who is "graduating" from the Parents' Club, for all her hard work and leadership for five years in a row.
